‘Pops’ concerts planned

Monday, April 20, 2009

An array of popular songs from the past will be featured in two “pops concerts” to be performed this month by music students at Emporia High School.

Three choirs will be involved in “Fun in the Sun!” at 7 p.m. Thursday in the EHS Auditorium.

The concert will include songs made popular by the Beach Boys, as well as “Walking on Sunshine,” “It’s Raining Men,” “The Twist,” “Rainy Days and Mondays” and other fun songs, according to Sheree’ Stoppel, EHS vocal music instructor.

The concert, open to the public at no charge, will be presented by vocalists in Treble Choir, Choralaires and Select Women.

April 30 will bring a “True Colors” concert by the EHS Chorale and Viva Voce, as well as several special numbers by soloists and duets.

A Potato Food Bar is planned from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. before the concert. Tickets are $6 for the food and concert, or $3 for the concert only. Tickets are available from any chorale student, or may be purchased until Monday, April 27, at the EHS office.

The musical performance will start at 7 p.m. in the EHS Auditorium.

“This concert will involve songs with colors in the titles and lyrics,” Stoppel said.

Among the songs that will be performed are “A Wonderful World,” “Over the Rainbow,” “California Dreaming,” “Lil’ Red Riding Hood,” “Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini,” and “True Colors.”

Melinda Groves will accompany the choirs at both performances.
