Six different Emporia High players scored goals as the Spartan soccer team snapped its three-game losing streak on Friday at Junction City, routing the Blue Jays 6-0.
Emporia (4-3) dominated the game at both ends, getting off 30 shots on goal and holding Junction City to two. The Spartans’ first goal didn’t come until the 29:29 mark, when Jessica Madrigal scored unassisted. Less than three minutes later, Emily Burris scored her second goal of the year, and the Spartans took a 2-0 lead to the break.
“Our intensity was still not what it needed to be,” EHS coach John Decker said. “At halftime we discussed how the players needed to pick up their intensity, especially in scoring situations.”
EHS responded by scoring just 36 seconds into the second half, with Chloe Blake scoring off a pass from Jordan Sosa. Sosa scored less than three minutes later, with Ashley Leihsing picking up the first of two second-half assists. Bailey Sosa scored in the game’s 52nd minute off an assist from Kelly Bacon, who then scored off a pass from Leihsing at the 56:20 mark.
“Having so many different players that can score is nice and will give us some confidence moving forward,” Decker said.
Emporia High goalkeeper Melanie Nuessen picked up the shutout. The Spartans will host Wichita Northwest on Monday night, then will travel to Seaman on Tuesday.
