Spartans have 5 top-5 finishes at BVNW Met

With illnesses hurting its efforts, Emporia High’s swim team managed to post 15 best times at a three-team meet Tuesday at Blue Valley Northwest.
“We were missing 11 girls — all sick,” coach Bob Yevak said. “For the most part, good effort.”
The Spartan swimmers had four top-five finishes, and the divers had one. Kathryn Scherich swam to a third-place finish in the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 27.01 seconds, and also represented the last leg of the 200 freestyle relay team behind Rebecca Tidwell, Summer Wilson and Erica Krueger. That team finished third with a time of 1:53.38.
The same four swimmers ran the 400 freestyle relay and clocked a third-place finish with a time of 4:22.46. Kristen Ranalli finished the 500 freestyle in 7:10.72 for a fourth-place finish.
Carissa Schmitz gave the Spartan divers a top-five placing, scoring 184.20 points to finish fourth.
Emporia travels to Manhattan on Monday for its next meet, which will start at 3:30 p.m.
