Council Grove’s baseball team took the first game and lost the second in a doubleheader with Osage City on Tuesday at Council Grove.
Sean Carr took a no-hitter into the fifth inning and got a complete-game win for the Braves in a 7-4 Game One victory. Leading 1-0, the Braves added three runs in the fifth with an RBI double by Collin Johnson and a two-run homer by Derek Ziegenhirt. They got three more in the sixth to break a 4-4 tie, led by hits from Dusty Maas and Johnson.
In Game Two, Osage got three runs in each of the final two innings to take an 8-2 win. Wes Roddy started for the Braves and left in the fifth with the game tied 2-2. Broc Finch notched an RBI single in the second for Council Grove but ended up taking the loss for the Braves.
“We played pretty well until the final two innings of the night, when our pitching faltered a little and our defense fell apart,” Council Grove coach Joe Buchanan said. “It would have been nice to get a sweep, but Osage is a good team, and we just didn’t play well enough at the end to make it happen.”
Osage boys win Royal Valley Invite
The Osage City boys track team won the Royal Valley Invitational on Tuesday, edging Santa Fe Trail by half a point.
Strong performances by the Indians included victories in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes for Tyler Bartee. Bartee finished the 100 in 10.83 seconds, the 200 in 23.06 and the 400 in 52.42. Right behind him in the 200 was Osage teammate Sultan Cousin, who finished his run in 23.84. Bartee and Cousin, along with Jordan Tice and Justin Cooley, were part of the 4x100 relay team that was victorious with a time of 45.52. Osage’s 4x800 relay team of Blake Stoppel, Richard Woodward, Kyle Stromgren and Chris Buenger won the 4x800 relay, clocking a 9:03.95.
Among other strong Osage finishes, Devin Lindbloom finished second in the shot put, Kyle Hallgren finished third in the discus and Tice and Cousin finished third and fourth, respectively, in the long jump. The Indian boys finished with 121.5 team points.
The Osage girls finished eighth out of eight squads with 26 points. Cally Aspegren clocked a second-place finish in the 3,200 meters with a time of 13:37.46.
Heights golfers
finish 11th
Northern Heights finished in last place out of 11 teams with a team score of 499 at its home invitational golf tournament on Tuesday.
Brennan Davis shot a 116 to lead the Wildcats. John Bell had a 118, Derek Fields shot a 128 and Dan Gibson finished with a 137.
“I thought we could have played better,” Heights coach Tim Riemann said. “We have a young team that just needs to get out and play more golf. I think that we are improving, but we have a long way to go.”
Osage City’s golf team shot a 389 to finish eighth.Nathan Johnson led the Indians with a score of 89. Derek Michael shot a 93, Landon Heward finished with a 98, Lance Williamson had a 109 and Mitch Martin had a 118.
Jefferson West won the tournament with a score of 324. Rossville’s Trace McDiffett fired a 78 to win the individual title.
