The final draft of a Juvenile Justice Authority block grant application gained approval Tuesday afternoon during a brief meeting of the Community Corrections Advisory Board at the Lyon County Courthouse.
The board went over the first draft of the application during its February meeting.
The total budget for Fiscal Year 2010 is $1,111,118, including grants.
Community Corrections Executive Director Robert Sullivan said that the application was updated with current information and that some sections now had more in-depth data than last year’s application.
Sullivan said that the department has set its own goals for having risk assessment and case supervision work done within 30 days of intake. That goal is being reached in 93 percent of the cases.
The local standards are more ambitious than the state requirement of 45 days for completion.
“100 percent ... are done to KDOC standards,” Sullivan said.
The budget breakdown for 2010 is: $413,560, JJA graduated sanctions block grant; $86,414, JJA prevention block grant; $221,350, local government; $383,394, Kansas Department of Corrections; $3,500, program fees; and $3,000, electronic monitoring program.
The board talked about expanding resources that can help offenders when they are free from judicial constraints and operating on their own in the community.
Sullivan said that offenders often have no problems when they are operating under a structured supervision.
“But once released, they get into trouble,” he said. “... One of the things we want to try to do is build up ongoing support in the community.”
The support can come from ministerial alliances in Lyon and Chase counties, mentors in the community and through employers and co-workers.
The topic will be discussed again at a later meeting.
