Prisoner jumps from upper level

Evaluation at Newman Hospital

Tuesday, April 14, 2009

A prisoner from the Lyon County Jail is being evaluated at Newman Regional Health after she apparently jumped from an upper level area inside the jail between 8:30 and 8:40 a.m. today.

Sheriff Gary Eichorn said that the woman, whose name is not being released, apparently had hugged some fellow prisoners before running up stairs and jumping to the ground floor.

“A couple of the girls back there broke her fall, so she really didn’t hit very hard,” Eichorn said. “Lucky for the baby; she’s pregnant.”

The woman was taken by Emporia-Lyon County Ambulance technicians to Newman. She had been in jail several months.

Eichorn said that one of the prisoners who broke the woman’s fall complained of discomfort with her back.

Interviews were underway this morning with approximately 18 staff and inmates to determine the details of the incident.

More information is expected to be available later today or on Wednesday.

How sad that a pregnant woman would apparently try to take her life. I bet everyone at the jail will be upset for quite some time.

How sad a pregnant woman would do something to deserve jail time.

How sad that anyone has to go to jail, really. I'm willing to bet there's a lot of tragic stories in any jail or prison. I've been told that the same people keep ending up in jail again and again. What a waste!

How sad for that baby to have to be raised by a suicidal, jail-bird. I really hate to be that negative but damn...

I'm with you, Weltha. This woman can't possibly be good mother material. I'm guessing SRS will step in and find a foster home. What a way to begin life. But, better a foster home than an unstable real one.

crack, you are such a jerk. God did not plan for her to get pregnant or jump! SHE chose to do that. It's a little thing called Free Will. Go to any church of your choice and I am sure the pastor can explain it to you and provide examples from the Bible. Do you sit around thinking of offensive things to say, or what? My heart goes out to the woman who felt so desperate she attempted this. And for the child who will most likely have a hard life due to the choices of its parents.

madpoet, crackinsack is an internet forum phenomenon called a "troll". People like that make comments on forums with the sole goal of getting a rise out of readers. They have lots of time on their hands, and have nothing productive to do in the world, so they inhabit forums like this to get attention so they can feel important. crackinsack is a prime example, as evidenced by the number of inflammatory comments that can be found on the Gazette forums by her. Best just to ignore these kind of people.

sounds like a bad situation was averted by the females who broke her fall. those stairs present real problems. one inmate used a "boat" bed and flew down them. a male inmate also fell and had bad head injuries. the jail really isn't designed for people who have to be there for looooong stretches. there's so little for the inmates to do besides sleep and eat. at least in prison there are more educational programs and other activities.

You wonder why I have said that you hate religion. You make statements like the above and it's pretty obvious.
Enjoy getting your "healthy" drunk on without the shs. Please don't drive after you do.

Actually, I think having crack on Dr. Phil would be much more entertaining than having her speak to my pastor. He is a practical man who once told me we just can't save them all. I think crack falls in that category. I wouldn't wish her on him or anyone else for that matter. Dr. Phil gets paid big bucks to tolerate fools.
