Taxpayer Tea Party

Grassroots activists will hold a Taxpayer Tea Party at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Sixth Ave. and Merchant St. According to Vonda Wiedmer in a news release, “Our government continues to accumulate billions of dollars in debt and this is a burden our children and grandchildren will have to carry. Kansas are fed up with how our government has been run and how federal bureaucrats are spending our tax dollars. I hope this Taxpayer Tea Party will show our elected officials and the media that we cannot continue down this path.” According to the news release, hundreds of tea parties have been planned nationwide, with more than a dozen being held across the state of Kansas. Farmers Market Workshop

A Farmers Market Workshop will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. April 18. For location, call market manager Tracey Graham at 343-6555. Jerry Jost, Kansas Farmers Market project coordinator for the Kansas Rural Center, will lead this workshop to help vendors prepare for the coming season. According to the news release, there will be plenty of great information and inspiration for new and experienced vendors. Masonic awards

Emporia Masonic Lodge 12 is holding their annual Awards Ceremony and Banquet, beginning at 6 p.m. April 17 at the Masonic Temple, 424 Merchant St. Activities begin at 6 p.m., with dinner to be served at 6:30 p.m. followed by awards presentations. Masons and their families, members of affiliated bodies and the public are invited. Awards will be presented by the Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Kansas, A.F.&A.M., Roy Sullivan. The cost of the catered meal is $5. Reservations are needed by Friday and can be made between 12:30 and 4 p.m. at 342-3913 or by e-mail to emporia12@cableone.net.

USD 252 Southern Lyon County meeting

USD 252 Southern Lyon County meets at 7 p.m. Monday at the Board of Education Office in Hartford.

The agenda includes approvals bills due and payable, payrolls, pledge securities, building activity, petty cash, contracts for signature, resignations; consent agenda items pulled for discussion; current board polidy in regards to complaints-concerns to board of education; comments from the public; RTI roofing representative; old junior high building in Neosho Rapids; architect for concession-locker room at Hartford; multi-tiered system of support (MTSS) implemented 2009-10; site council annual written reports; personnel; technology upgrades; negotiations; financial reports; capital outlay report and direction of the board; 2009-10 budget; superintendent’s report; board member comments; adjournment.

Volunteer Thanks

Salvation Army Summer Camps

Enrollment is being taken now for several Salvation Army summer camps to be held at Three Trails Camp and Retreat Center in Kansas City, Mo. The 20090 schedule includes a music camp, a sports camp and Christian-oriented camps for children of all ages. Camps run anywhere from three to six days and generally cost between $10-$25 each child. Transportation to and from Three Trails Camp is provided for participants throughout Kansas and western Missouri. The Salvation Army also offers several specialized camp for children of prison inmates, senior citizens and low-income familes.
