Hornet hitters stay hot at Truman

The Emporia State offense continued to rack up the runs on Friday in a doubleheader sweep at Truman State. The Hornets won 12-4 and 18-8 in a run-rule victory.

In the Hornets’ last four games, they’ve scored 58 runs.

In Game One on Friday, the Hornets outhit the Bulldogs 17-5 and had eight extra-base hits.

Six Hornets had multi-hit games. Conner Crumbliss and Kellen Lane both had three hits. All three of Lane’s hits went for doubles, and Crumbliss had two doubles.

Kenny Burkhead went 2-for-4 and led the Hornets with three RBIs. Jeremy Francis, Mike Sharp and Kevin Wempe also had two hits apiece. Caleb Williamson hit his first home run of the season and drove in two runs.

ESU pitcher Ryan Anthony started the game and had to leave in the third inning after a line drive struck him in the right (non-throwing) wrist. Justin Maxson came on in relief and pitched five innings to finish the seven-inning game.

Maxson (2-0) gave up two runs (only one earned) and two hits to pick up the win.

In Game Two, Emporia State ran out to a big lead with a 10-run fifth inning. The Hornets had 11 hits and scored all 10 runs in the fifth with two outs.

Francis led the Hornets in Game Two, going 4-for-5 with a double, triple and two RBIs. Marc Albers went 3-for-5 with four RBIs. Sharp also went 3-for-5 and hit his ninth home run of the season and also had four RBIs.

Every Hornet starter had at least one hit in the game. Crumbliss, Francis, Williamson and Burkhead all finished with two RBIs.

Cole Moore picked up his fifth win in as many starts. Moore (5-0) did have his worst start of the season, giving up seven runs in 4 1/3 innings.

Emporia State and Truman finish their series today with another doubleheader in Kirksville, Mo. Game One starts at noon.
