ESU tennis teams swept at SW Baptist
Both the Emporia State men’s and womens’ tennis teams were swept by Southwest Baptist on Friday in Springfield, Mo. The men fell to SBU 5-0, while the women lost 7-0. Because of inclement weather in Bolivar, Mo., the matches were moved to Springfield, Mo., and played indoors at the Cooper Tennis Complex. Not all matches were played due to the move.
The ESU women will stay in southwest Missouri and take on Missouri Southern today. The next action for the Hornet men will be a Senior Day match up along with the women against Washburn on April 17 in Emporia.
Guillen goes on DL with injured hip
The Royals placed right fielder Jose Guillen on the 15-day disabled list Friday with a partially torn hip flexor and purchased the contract of right-hander Sidney Ponson from Triple-A Omaha.
Guillen started the first three games for the Royals, opening the season 2-for-12 (.167) with no extra-base hits. He hit .264 with 20 homers and 97 RBIs last season after signing a $36 million, three-year contract with Kansas City.
Signed to a minor league contract on March 17, the 32-year-old Ponson started against his former team, the New York Yankees, on Friday in his Royals’ debut.
Ponson was 8-5 with a 5.04 ERA in 25 starts with the Yankees and Texas last season.
