Museum program
Casey Quinlan and Brian Edwards, nationally recognized experts on the Kennedy assassination, will present the program at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Lyon County Museum. They also will be available for questions. The program is free and the public is encouraged to attend.
Book sale
The Friends of the Library Book Sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. April 17; 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 18; 2 to 5 p.m. April 19 and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. April 20-22. A special sale for Friends members will be from 5 to 8 p.m. April 16 for life members and 6 to 8 p.m. for all members. The Friends have a large collection of children’s books, inspirational fiction, VHS tapes and westerns available for sale. They also will have the “bargain bag” sale.
Library tea
The public is invited to Hartford to attend the Annual Library Tea at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Elmendaro Township Library in Hartford in celebration of National Library Week, April 12-18. The theme is “Worlds Connect @ Your Library.” The speaker will be the Rev. Balachandra Miriyala, pastor of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hartford and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Olpe. The Rev. “Bala” is from India; he will speak about India and his time in the United States. Entertainment will be by 4-H members; refreshments will be served by the Hartford United Methodist Women.
Poetry contest
In honor of National Poetry Month, the Poet Laureate of Kansas, Denise Low, is offering two poetry-writing contests a week through the month of April. Prairie Talk
Donald Worster, author of “A Passion for Nature: the Life of John Muir,” will discuss his biography of conservationist John Muir in a Prairie Talk at 2 p.m. April 18 at Pioneer Bluffs near Matfield Green. Heights benefit
“A Night on the Town,” a dinner and concert featuring pianist Robyn Meahl, presented by the Northern Heights High School Booster Club, will be held April 18 at the school. Serving begins at 5:30 p.m.; concert doors open at 7:15 p.m. Dinner will be chicken-fried steak with gravy, baked potato, green beans, roll, dessert and beverage. The cost for the dinner and concert is $8 each person and $6 each child (one-half portion); the cost for the concert only is $2 for adults and $1 for students. Reservations for dinner must be received by Monday. Admission will be taken at the door if attending the concert only. Student exhibits
• The annual juried ESU Art Student Exhibition is on display through April 30 in the Norman R. Eppink Gallery Gilson Memorial Gallery, with an opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday in the lobby of Bruder Theatre. The exhibition is judged by an outside expert nominated by the faculty and brought to campus to review and select the best student work of the academic year, stated the news release.
• “Salon des Refuses’” will be an exhibition of ESU student art works on display through April 30 at the Emporia Arts Center, 618 Mechanic St.
Music performances
The ESU Department of Music presents guest artist Gustavo Martin, cellist and composer, who will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Heath Recital Hall, along with Virginia Covarrubias, pianist. The concert will feature the music of contemporary Mexican composers. Martin is professor of cello at the National School of Music in Mexico City. At 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, the Mid-America Woodwind Quintet will perform in Heath Recital Hall. Admission is $5 general admission; $4 for students and senior citizens. Emporians exhibit
A Bethany College art student from Emporia, Hugo Escabar, senior, drawing, painting and sculpture received a merit award for his art which has been on display as part of the Bethany College Messiah Festival Juried Student Art Exhibition at Lindsborg. Winners were announced Sunday with the exhibition to be held through Tuesday. The exhibition features ceramics, crafts, design, drawings, paintings, photography, printmaking and sculpture created by the art students who are taking classes. The juried exhibition is part of the Messiah Festival of the Arts, an eight-day celebration of sacred music, theatre and art at Bethany College. The festival features the Bethany Oratorio Society’s 128th anniversary performances of Handel’s “Messiah,” to be performed at 3 p.m. Easter Sunday at Presser Hall on campus. Club scene
• “The Usual Suspects” perform at 8 p.m. April 17 at The Noose. There is no cover charge and seating is limited. The Noose is now nonsmoking with a designated, covered smoking area behind the club.
• “the co-dependents” will perform at 9 p.m. April 18 at Capt’n Drinkwater’s in Strong City and at 8 p.m. May 2 at the Heidi Inn in Lebo.
Student contest
All five national parks in Kansas are sponsoring the “I, Too, Am America” student contest, open to all seventh and eighth grade students in Kansas. As a way of engaging youth with their national parks, student contestants will select one of three mediums to tell how their personal or family story relates to a central theme of the parks, stated the news release. All entries must be received by May 8, 2009. ESU show
“She Stoops to Conquer,” under the direction of Jim Ryan will be performed at 7:30 p.m. in the Karl C. Bruder Theatre in King Hall April 29 through May 2.
