Fire destroyed a garage northwest of Emporia Wednesday afternoon, according to information from the Lyon County Sheriff’s office.
Deputies and firefighters from the Emporia-Lyon County Fire Department found the garage fully engulfed in flames when they arrived at 1951 Road E. The fire was reported at 4:24 p.m.
Owner Orlando Garza and his family were home at the time. A member of the family noticed smoke coming from the garage as she prepared to leave. Garza tried to douse the fire with a garden hose while a daughter called 911 to report the emergency, according to the sheriff’s log.
Deputy Jody Meyers said that the cause of the fire is under investigation by the sheriff’s department and by the fire department.
Damage estimate for the garage was $20,000, plus contents.
