Sarah Rice, senior, at EHS prepares for the student show.

Students in glass, ceramics, sculpture, drawing and painting, metals and jewelry art classes will open an art exhibit Thursday evening in the Emporia High School library, with student musicians and student cooks collaborating to enhance the event.

“I myself will have at least one piece from every student I have right now — this semester, probably close to 100,” said Janice Spade, one of EHS’s art instructors. “We’ll fill the library with art is what we’ll do.”

The show will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday. People who want to see the exhibit after the show may first stop in the EHS office to register; the exhibit will be open through April 16.

The exhibit Thursday evening will precede the EHS Theatre Department’s presentation of “12 Angry Jurors,” which will begin at 7 p.m.

Spade said that art students held their first show last year.

“We had 200 people come, even without advertising and having a lot of to-do about it,” she said. “It was so positive and people loved it so much, we decided to make it a yearly thing.”

Many of the art pieces will be offered for sale .

“There’s a really huge range of what’s available,” she said. “There’s quite a variety for sale.”

Area residents who attend the show on Thursday also will be entertained by music students of Sheree’ Stoppel, vocal instructor, and Bob Haselhuhn, band instructor.

Because the event is on Maundy Thursday, and a number of participants have service commitments at churches, fewer will participate than last year, Stoppel said; however, vocalists, instrumentalists and a few violinists will be there to perform in another area of the library.

Students from the Family and Consumer Science Department will prepare refreshments for those who attend the show.
