Emporia High’s boys golf squad opened its 2009 season with a ninth-place finish out of 12 teams at the Salina Central Invitational.
Senior Craig Morgan posted the Spartans’ best score at Salina Municipal Golf Course, firing a 90. Jared Schaefer and Caleb Chiroy each posted a 97, and Larkin Bennett rounded out the Spartans’ team score with a 98. Zach Hill put up a 105.
Emporia finished with 382 team points. Manhattan won the tournament with a team score of 319.
Because the tournament was pushed back a day because of weather, EHS coach Rick Eckert had a schedule conflict and couldn’t make the trip, so assistant coach Bob Miller took the Spartans to Salina.
“We had four guys under 100, so I’m pleased with that,” Eckert said. “It’s one of those things where it’s a new year, a new group of kids and expectations are gonna be a little bit different. So for us, I’m glad that we broke 400. Now, we’ve got a place to start and build from, because I know the kids can play better than this.”
The Spartans will compete in their second tournament of the year at Lake Shawnee Golf Course in Topeka on Thursday beginning at 3 p.m. Topeka High will host that tournament, which will feature a different group of EHS golfers in Austin Knight, Tyler Agler, Chris Alderman and Ryan Schlup.
