Council Grove, Chase County split doubleheader

Wednesday, April 8, 2009

Council Grove’s baseball team hosted Chase County on Tuesday, splitting a doubleheader with the Bulldogs.

Council Grove run-ruled Chase County in the first game, taking a 16-6 victory in six innings. Greg Davis hit a three-run homer for Chase County in the first inning to give the Bulldogs the lead, and Chase County added three more in the third to take a 6-0 lead. But Council Grove starter Sean Carr settled down after that, and the Bulldogs wouldn’t score again. The Braves sent 10 men to the plate in the fifth inning and 11 in the sixth, scoring six runs in each of those innings. Travis LeMay went 4-for-5 for Council Grove, leading seven Braves who had two or more hits.

The Bulldogs came out on top in an all-out slugfest in Game Two, beating the Braves 17-16. Chase County once again built a big early lead, and the Bulldogs led 16-6 through four-and-a-half. But Council Grove scored 13 runs in the final three innings and had the tying run at second base in the bottom of the seventh before Chase County closed out the game. The teams combined for 25 hits — 18 by Chase County — and 13 errors.

“It was a strange evening,” Council Grove baseball coach Joe Buchanan said. “We scored (32) runs in a doubleheader — and split. We played well and looked good in Game One, but we didn’t stay focused in Game Two. Our mistakes kept us from getting a win there.”

Chase County is now 3-1 on the year, while Council Grove is 1-3. The Braves play Thursday at Herington. Chase County will host Burlington.

Bulldogs, Braves

split twin bill

Chase County’s softball team split a doubleheader on Tuesday at Council Grove.

The Bulldogs won the first game 6-2, with Taylor Rains going the distance and allowing no earned runs. Singles by Aubrey Watts and Ashley Cahoone in the top of the fifth gave Chase County a 3-2 lead, and the Bulldogs added another run in the sixth and two more in the seventh. Robin Grokett went 3-for-4 for Chase County, and Briana Talkington went 2-for-4.

Council Grove won Game Two by a 4-1 score off four runs in the bottom of the second. Rains tripled to drive in Chase County’s only run, and Cahoone went 2-for-4.

Now 3-1, Chase County will host Burlington on Thursday in a doubleheader beginning at 4:30 p.m.
