Benefit planned for Tebbetts

Wednesday, April 8, 2009

A classic Camaro and a compact convertible will be prizes in a fundraising effort that will begin Friday on behalf of long-time Emporia businessman Dan Tebbetts, owner of D&T Auto Sales and Emporia Brake and Muffler, 1806 W. Sixth Ave.

Tebbetts was diagnosed with bladder cancer about a year ago, according to information from one of the event organizers, Connie Lewis.

He had completed a series of treatments and underwent surgery about two weeks ago to remove a tumor that had been reduced in size.

“Two weeks ago, the doctors believed that removal of the bladder would be the beginning of Dan’s journey to be cancer-free,” Lewis said. “This was not the case, however.”

Doctors discovered that the cancer had moved to his stomach. They advised that aggressive chemotherapy for six months could give him perhaps another year to live; without treatment, the estimate is six months.

“Dan had already undergone six months of chemo,” Lewis said. “Dan and his wife Jeannell have spent all their resources on Dan’s treatment.”

A group of friends has formed a committee to raise funds for his treatment at the Cancer Treatment Center at Tulsa, Lewis said.

Tickets will be available for the drawings for a 1992 Geo Metro convertible and a 1967 Chevrolet Camaro, Lewis said. The suggested donation for the Metro tickets is $5; the suggested donation for the Camaro will be determined this week.

The group also plans a concert and a banquet to raise funds so treatment can begin. Details about those events will be released as they become available.

Donations for Tebbetts’ treatment also may be made to the Dan Tebbetts Medical Fund, in care of CoreFirst Bank & Trust, 701 Merchant St., Emporia KS 66801.

More information on the fundraising events may be had by calling Lewis at 342-0826.

Tebbetts is an excellent man. I'm sorry to hear about his illness. I hope the community can help him out.
