Workshops for animal advocates

Tuesday, April 7, 2009

Local animal rights activists won’t have to go far in May to learn the best way to market pets needing homes and the best way to raise funds for an organization.

The Petfinder.com adoptions seminar will be May 3 at the Emporia State University Kanza Room. On the preceding day, an animal advocate coalition meeting will be at Candlewood Suites, 2602 Candlewood Drive.

The first meeting is the inaugural meeting of the Heartland Coalition and is sponsored by the Rockin’ Paw Rescue & Adoption Network of Parsons. The meeting will start at 6 p.m. May 2 with informal social networking; 6:30 p.m. with introductions and kick-off; 7 p.m., a special presentation for Teambuilding and Networking and 8 p.m. wrap-up and outline of events for the next day’s seminar.

The Petfinder.com Adoption Options Seminar will be from 9 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. May 3 at the Emporia State University Memorial Union. Rockin’ Paw Rescue & Adoption Network is hosting the event, which is being sponsored by PETCO Foundation. The seminar is open to anyone involved in animal welfare and will include tips on how to market pets online, grassroots fundraising, adoption strategies and how to train shelter dogs.

The cost of the May 3 event is $20 ($10 for Petfinder.com members) and includes lunch, a Petfinder.com T-shirt, a gift from PETCO and educational materials. For more information e-mail adoptionoptions@petfinder.com or visit http:///www.petfinder.com/adoptionoptions.

For more information about the Heartland Coalition call 340-2749 or visit http://www.rockingpaw.petfinder.com.

From April 7, 2009 Grass and Grain Newspaper:

The Center for Consumer
Freedom (CCF) has
published documents showing
that People for the Ethical
Treatment of Animals
(PETA) killed 95% of the
adoptable pets in its care
last year. According to public
records from the Virginia
Department of Agriculture
and Consumer Services,
PETA euthanized 2,124
pets last year, while placing
only seven in adoptive
homes. Since 1998, a total of
21,339 dogs and cats have
been euthanized by PETA at
its Norfolk, VA, headquarters.
CCF questioned the fact
that PETA doesn’t operate
an adoption shelter despite
a $32 million annual budget.
David Martosko, CCF’s research
director, called
PETA a “hypocritical killing
machine.”
“Since killing pets is AOK
with PETA, why should
anyone listen to their demands
about eating meat,
using lab rats for medical
research or taking children
to the circus?” Martosko
said.
CCF is a non-profit coalition
supported by the food
industry to promote personal
responsibility and protect
consumer choices.

What the heck does PETA or any of your comments have to do with workshops for animal advocates? These workshops are for shelter and rescue groups! The workshops will give animal advocates more tools to save the lives of abused and abandoned animals.
There will be some very esteemed and respected speakers at these conferences. Dr. Steve Notaro, University of Illinois Strategic Planning, Statistics, Ethics President,Illinois Animal Welfare Federation will be one of the special guest. Susan Shaw, CARE Feline Rescue @ Orange County Animal Services Advisory Board will be another speaker. Sue Sternberg, Founder & Director at Roundout Valley Animals for Adoption will be there as well as Lynn Katz who is the Shelter Outreach Specialist with Petfinder.com.
This is going to be a fantastic experience for coalition building among shelter and rescue organizations across the state of Kansas and beyond!
The hope is to provide leadership for regional and statewide projects while lending support to organizations and promoting collaboration and partnerships.
Interested people can email rockinpaw@cableone.net for more information.
