Students, parents and community partners will kick off the Safe Routes to School for William Allen White Elementary School from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Wednesday. The groups will be walking and bicycling different routes to and from the school to identify safer routes and infrastructure changes that are needed, as well.
The event includes balloon animals, popcorn, drinks, a safety demonostration from the Emporia Police Department bicycle patrol and a visit from the Fire Safety Pup.
The Safe Routes to School program is sponsored by Emporia's Multi-Use Path Planning Board, which wants all drivers to be aware of more schoolchildren walking and biking to schools now that spring weather is here.
Logan Avenue Elementary School will have its kick-off event April 22.
Anyone wanting to be a volunteer walking leader is asked to call Suzanne Worthen, 342-4864 Ext. 201.
