The Emporia State softball team opened the MIAA season on Friday with a split against Nebraska-Omaha.
The Hornets lost the opener 8-6 and bounced back to win 4-2 in the second game.
Miranda Campbell gave the Hornets an early lead in the first with a two-run homer, her fourth of the season. The Hornets would take a 4-0 lead on a UNO error in the third inning, but the Mavericks scored six unanswered runs on their way to a victory.
Megan Dennis (9-4) took the loss, breaking a streak of seven straight wins in her previous seven starts. Campbell gave up six runs in 3 2/3 innings.
Jennifer Heerey came on in relief and extended her streak of scoreless innings to 19 before UNO scored a run in the fifth and another in the sixth.
Heerey helped the Hornets break even in the second game, giving up only two runs in 6 2/3 innings.
Nebraska-Omaha took an early 1-0 lead, and Abby Hughes tied the game in the third with her fifth home run of the season.
Jill Peters gave the Hornets the lead with an RBI single in the sixth inning. The Hornets added two insurance runs in the seventh on RBI singles by Hughes and Aubree Brattin.
With the split, Emporia State is 20-9 overall and 1-1 in the MIAA. The Hornets are back in action today with a doubleheader at Northwest Missouri.
