Emporia High’s girls soccer team got off to a 2-0 start on the season and advanced to today’s Red bracket championship game of the Titan Classic with a 2-1 victory over Derby on Friday in Wichita.
Junior Jordan Sosa scored both goals for the Spartans, and both came in the first half. Her first came on a shot from about 25 yards out at the 24:38 mark. The second came at 34:14, when she got to a ball at the same time as the defender, overpowered her and kicked a shot off the hands of the diving goalkeeper into the nearpost.
Derby added a goal at the 41:56 mark from Whitney Skinner, but that turned out to be the last of the scoring. EHS coach John Decker said the Spartans “panicked a little” in the second half, when they had to go against a strong wind, but they still notched their second straight victory.
“We were able to put up a strong defensive stand and hold on to the one-point lead,” Decker said.
Emporia got off eight shots on goal to Derby’s four. The Spartans will play for the Red Bracket title at 3 p.m. today against Wichita South, which defeated Winfield on Friday.
