Receives award

An award recognizing the link between university teacher education programs and the schools for which they supply instructors has been presented to a faculty member of The Teachers College at Emporia State University.

Deeann Holmes, instructor of early childhood/elementary teacher education, received the 2008 Distinguished Clinician in Teacher Education award from the Association of Teacher Educators (ATE).

Holmes was recognized for her work in monitoring and staff development activities for teacher education students and their mentors as part of ESU’s Professional Development School arrangement with Emporia USD 253 schools. “Dee is the glue that holds Emporia State’s relationship with the Emporia Unified School District together,” wrote Dr. Larry Lyman, professor of early childhood/elementary teacher education in nominating Holmes for the award.

The award was presented at the ATE’s annual meeting Feb. 14 — 18 in Dallas.

ESU grad distinguished

An Emporia State University Distinguished Alumnus is receiving another honor.

Glenn K. Andrews, who holds a doctorate degree and serves as professor of biochemistry and molecular biology and anatomy and cell biology at the University of Kansas Medical Center, has been named a University Distinguished Professor by KU Chancellor Robert Hemenway.

The title is the highest honor KU can bestow on its faculty, recognizing those making outstanding contributions in teaching, research and service to their professions and communities.

Andrews, who has been at the medical center since 1984, is an international expert on the biochemical mechanisms of zinc homeostasis. He is serving as chair for the International Society for Zinc in Biology.

He will be honored during a symposium on June 9 at the medical center.

Chief earns certification

Jack Taylor, Emporia fire and EMS chief, has completed the process to earn the professional designations of Chief Fire Officer and Chief Medical officer from the Commission on Professional Credentialing, an entity of the Center for Public Safety Excellence. He is one of only 19 professionals to hold the dual designation.

The credentialing program is a voluntary program that evaluates candidates through peer review in seven measured components: experience, education, professional development, professional contributions, association membership, community involvement and technical competencies.

The designation is valid for three years. To maintain it, Taylor will have to remain current in professional development, professional contributions, active association membership and community involvement.

ABWA honors Beatty

Robin Beatty, an office assistant with Stanion Wholesale, is the Woman of the Year for the Emporia chapter of the American Business Women Association.

Beatty has served as vice president of ABWA for two years, membership chair for one year and co-chair of the hospitality committee for two years, as well as participating in all fundraising events.

ESB rates at top

ESB Financial has earned a 5-Star Superior rating from BauerFinancial of Coral Gables, Fla., a bank and credit union rating and research firm.

In a news release BauerFinancial noted that the number of 5-Star banks has fallen and only 7 percent of the nation’s banks hold the rating. However, ESB Financial has held a 5-Star spot for 68 consecutive quarters.

The ratings firm bases its report on the bank’s overall financial picture and says that no institution pays for its rating. Information about the star ratings is available at www.bauerfinancial.com.
