The Emporia High girls swimming and diving team’s second meet of the year was a huge step up from their first.
The Spartans finished third among 12 teams on Thursday at Hummer Sports Park in Topeka, posting 286 team points. That total was just four points behind McPherson Swim Club’s second-place finish, and the Spartans posted 28 best times and three State-consideration times.
The 200 freestyle relay team of Rebecca Tidwell, Michelle Thompson, Summer Wilson and Kathryn Scherich finished second with a time of 1 minute, 49.83 seconds, good for State consideration and just a tenth of a second off McPherson’s winning pace. The 400 free relay team, featuring the same lineup, also earned State consideration with its third-place finish at 4:04.23. Tidwell earned individual State consideration in the 100 freestyle, finishing second with a time of 58.81 seconds. She also finished third in the 200 freestyle, logging a time of 2:10.78.
Michelle Thompson earned a top-five finish in the 50 freestyle, coming in fourth with a time of 28.05, and in the 100 breaststroke, Megan Wacker just missed the top five, finishing sixth. Carissa Schmitz and Chelsea Kessler finished second and third, respectively, in diving.
