Friday Thoughts

Friday, April 3, 2009

Friday Thoughts is a light-hearted commentary.

A WHILE BACK, we wrote about how the Lawrence Journal-World reported that local farmers were not happy about a new flatulence tax that could be placed on their livestock. Apparently belching and gaseous cows and hogs are helping destroy the ozone, and the Environmental Protection Agency could make ranchers pay $175 for every dairy cow, $87.50 for every beef cow and $20 for every hog.

Recently, the Wall Street Journal reported that studies were being done on sheep to limit their belching because they are also producing methane gas.

With all this media coverage our four-legged friends are getting, I am beginning to wonder which is more dangerous?

It does not surprise me at all that the Emporia Gazette would consider a tax that would cost area livestock producers most or all of their profit per animal humerous. Quite a few of us are quite concerned about both this "gas tax" and the current discussions about the EPA dust rules and how they will impact agriculture. These two things together, championed by the darlings of the Gazette, far left environmental zealots, have the potential to ruin the area agricultural economy if they were enacted, and there is absolutely nothing light hearted or funny about the situation.

Ultimately these regulations will result in higher food prices to consumers, just like many of the so called "green" energy ideas and cap and trade will result in higher energy costs to consumers. That is really something to joke about.

This is funny, if they pass a tax on humans my brother-in-law will be poor and need a line of credit to pass gas.

I'll have to admit 77, your comment is funny.
