During today’s Lyon County Commission meeting, April was proclaimed Month of the Young Child and many activities are planned to celebrate young children in Lyon County.
April 19 through 25 is National Week of the Young Child and Lyon County has expanded that into Month of the Young Child. The events in Lyon County are coordinated through a variety of community groups, including the Early Childhood Task Force.
Vanessa Apodaca of the Early Childhood Task Force said the Month of the Young Child is to celebrate young children and it’s not just for parents, it’s for aunts, uncles, grandparents and others involved in children’s lives.
Events will be held in Emporia to celebrate young children and educate parents and caregivers. Events are as follows:
• Friday, Count Your Kid In developmental screening, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Maynard Early Childhood Center; call 341-2326 for appointment.
• April 8, Over Under and Around and Through, 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., Lee Beran Recreation Center Gym.
• April 14, Family Fun Night, Family Story Time, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.; Family Art Time, 8 p.m., Emporia Public Library.
• April 18, Teddy Bear Clinic at the Flinthills Mall, featuring “Beary Good Breaks,” a break-out session for parents that include 20 minute sessions on diet, finding child care and dining on a dime.
• April 21, Infant Sign Language Class; 6:30 to 8 p.m., Lee Beran Recreation Center. Register by calling 340-6300. Cost is $5.
• April 25, Car Seat Safety Check Lane, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Staples Parking Lot, bring children with you.
• April 29, Soden’s Grove Family Fun Night, 5:30 to 7 p.m., ride the miniature train for free and visit the education center at the zoo.
• Children’s artwork will be displayed in Emporia Main Street merchant windows and at Flint Hills Mall and the Lyon County Courthouse throughout the month of April.
