County discusses rock-quarry request

Thursday, April 2, 2009

Lyon County commissioners breezed through a variety of topics Wednesday during their weekly study session.

One of the first items up for discussion was an application for a rock quarry by Reading Rock, which is owned by Don Jones. The property is near Reading and the application came with an approval recommendation from the Lyon County Planning and Appeals Board.

Commissioners are set to sign a resolution during today’s study session to raise the speed limit on Road U, Road S and Road 200. Last week, a motion was made to raise the speed limit, which was lowered during construction. Because the speed limit was originally lowered by a resolution, it has to be rescinded by a new resolution. The item was put on other business for today.

Gary Post, Lyon County appraiser, gave commissioners an update on property valuations appeals during Wednesday’s meeting. Post said appeals were about 55 percent of last year’s.

“We’re down about half of what we were last year,” Post said.

Out of the appeals made, 50 percent were residental, 25 percent commercial, 17 percent agricultural parcels and 9 percent were vacant lots.

In other matters:

• Commissioners listened to a comprehensive Geographic Information Systems demonstration. GIS is used for several purposes and generates maps, layers information and computerizes the information.

• Marc Goodman, Lyon County attorney, asked to donate $500 to the summer movie series to be taken from the drug forfeiture fund. Goodman said there seems to be a surge of cocaine and marijuana use in the high schools and activities such as the summer movie series are drug-free.

• Robert Sullivan, director of Community Corrections, sought approval of purchase of 32 mobile stacking chairs for the large and small conference rooms in the basement of the Lyon County Courthouse.

I can't believe they have it as 55 mph on a gravel road. I live on paved 170 and it's set at 45! That makes sense..
