Several people in Emporia were recognized Tuesday morning for their efforts in fighting chronic disease.
The recognition came from the Community Health Coalition, which sponsors events around the community, including Heart Healthy USD 253 kick-offs, fruit- and vegetable-consumption contests and Walk Across Kansas events. The coalition also applied for the city’s Safe Routes to School grant for USD 253 schools.
The coalition held Tuesday’s event at the Flint Hills Community Health Center to honor “champions in health care.” People in the community were honored for their efforts toward fighting chronic disease in the community.
Those recognized were:
- Community Health Coalition members — Barb Rourk, Nancy LeClear, Amy Townsend and Rachel LeClear.
- Multi-Use Planning Board members — William Borst, Dr. Jim Stephens.
- Lyon County Tobacco Free Coalition and Public Health Initiatives — Teresa Walters and Margi Grimwood.
- Clean Air Emporia — Teresa Walters, Mary McDaniel, Bobbi Sauder, Steve Sauder and Kari Hess.
- Key community health champion for Lyon County — Lougene Marsh.
“The coalition decided that in order to work on reducing the obesity epidemic in local youth, it would apply for Safe Routes to School funding to encourage physical activity to and from schools, while striving for infrastructure development with potential Phase II funding for the elementary schools,” a press release stated. “BG Consultants currently has plans for Logan, Walnut and William Allen White ready for local feedback before submitting them with the application for Phase II funding.”
Kick off events will be held at William Allen White Elementary School on April 8 and at Logan Avenue Elementary School on April 22. Walnut Elementary School had its event last fall.
“The Multi-Use Path Planning Board is continually striving to work toward receiving grant funding to work on the city’s comprehensive plan for a more walkable and bikeable community and recently sent two applications for stimulus funding, which unfortunately were not accepted,” the press release stated.

"First we'll take their freedoms in Emporia. Next, we'll stick it to the County."

Those county residents who neither live in Emporia nor could vote on the Emporia smoking ban, do not fret. Because even if the ban is defeated in Emporia, this will not be the end of it.
As you may or may not know the people who proposed this smoking ban to the City Commissioners will most certainly try to push it to a county wide smoking ban also. because of the following organizations and look who is the head of both organizations. None other than your/our illustrious know it all new County Commissioner, Teresa Walters.
And her faithful followers.
Lyon County Tobacco Free Coalition and Public Health Initiatives — Teresa Walters and Margi Grimwood.
- Clean Air Emporia — Teresa Walters, Mary McDaniel, Bobbi Sauder, Steve Sauder and Kari Hess.
It will not be long before the Empress of know it all, Teresa Walters will be trying to trample the freedoms, rights and civil liberties of all Lyon County citizens.
My advice to you as citizens of Lyon County, Olpe, Harford, Americus , etc., is to begin planning a strategy to try and defeat any attack from Empress, Teresa Walters and her army and cronies !
However if the shifty and sneaky man in the State Senate of the ban smoking dictators, " Senator Jim Barnett " gets his way a State Wide Ban will be enacted, using the same underhanded and devious tactics that the CAE tried to use in Emporia !
As I have said before. We as citizens of America must not and should not accept the forced erosion and taking away of even one of our freedoms, personal rights or civil liberties by any individual, group of individuals, politician or government !

“champions in health care.”
The Community Health Coalition members, probably so. Multi-Use Planning Board members? They probably are, too. Lougene Marsh? No argument; a dedicated lady.
But the Lyon County Tobacco Free Coalition & the Clean Air Emporia arrogant aristocrats? "Champions in health care?" Who received a bribe to honor that deceitful bunch of rabble-rousers?
The people listed as members of LCTFC and CAE aren't "champions" of anything except forcing their opinions and perceived view of proper behavior on everyone else. They are also champions of convincing others of how much better they are than "common" folks, maintaining their inflated egos, seeking special interest funds, grants, and taxpayer money by devious means, They are greedy social bullies using health issues to direct attention to themselves and achieve the control they desire and feel they deserve.
The Community Health Coalition should be ashamed for honoring these smug crusaders intent on eroding rights and freedoms using the most despicable bully tactics imaginable. Walters, Sauder, and the rest of their clueless clan are attempting to force all Emporians to adhere to their perception of acceptable social behavior using lies, twisted facts and logic, and gestapo-like tactics.
Honor them? Give me a break.

Does these people still go around to the bars pointing out underage drinkers to police officers? We use to get a kick out of knowing they did that, as we sat around and got drunk with their sons in high school...

How old are you people? Are you about to die from lung cancer from all your smoking. You smokers are a minority, and should just go back in your homes and stink them up and quit worrying about the rest of us who would like to have clean air when we go to dinner, or any other public location.
Smoking is NOT a social behavior, but rather an illness infecting everyone around the smoker. Maybe nurses and doctors should set an example by not smoking just outside doors of medical facilities?
