Chase, Osage counties get federal stimulus projects

No Emporia or Lyon County projects were selected by the Kansas Department of Transportation to receive federal stimulus money for the department’s Transportation Enhancement Program, but two projects in neighboring counties are among the 14 projects that will share in the $11.4 million program.
The projects are being made possible through economic stimulus funding under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
In a news release, KDOT said it received 101 applications from local units of government for funding consideration totaling more than $110 million.
“The Transportation Enhancement program provides federal highway funds for projects that strengthen the cultural, aesthetic or environmental value of our transportation system,” said Secretary of Transportation Deb Miller. “This program has been very popular in the state and these improvements couldn’t have happened without local partners and KDOT working together.”
Projects under the program fall into three major program categories — pedestrian and bicycle, scenic and environmental and historic.
Among the scenic and environmental projects, Chase County received funding for a visitors center on the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve along the Flint Hills Scenic Byway.
In bike and pedestrian projects, Osage County’s application for a pedestrian bridge over U.S. Highway 75 about 2.2 miles north of Lyndon was approved.

What happened to funding infrastructure? What do cultural, aesthetic or environmental value have to do with rebuilding roads or bridges about to fall apart? What a bunch of crap. Count down to 2010.
