Santa Fe Trail Days

The second annual Overbrook Santa Fe Trail Days will be held Friday and Saturday in Overbrook, featuring a spinner, quilter, Indian customs and dress, mountain men encampment, horseshoeing and old time tools and barbed wire.

The history of the Santa Fe Trail will be given by Ed Harmsion, and Ken Weidner “...brings the Cheyenne Dog Soldier to life with his authentic teepee and Indian war horse,” a news release said. A cannon will be shot by Battery B of Kansas at the artillery camp. Rex Patty will recreate the life of a military surgeon and Doug McGovern will portray Alexander Gardner, Civil War photographer. The history of 1860s Kansas will be given by Deb Goodrich.

From 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, the Native American Singers and Dancers Club from Royal Valley High School at Hoyt will perform in full costume. At noon Friday, there will be a Bean Feed and Milk Can Stew. A brisket meal will be served at 5 p.m. Friday and will include entertainment by Kareen King and Dusty Workman. A movie will be shown later.

On Saturday, there will be a Chuck Wagon breakfast and an all-horse parade at 11 a.m. at the fairgrounds. The saloon tent will have pork on a stick, beverages such as root beer and sarsparilla, popcorn and a poker tournament with dance hall girls watching the card sharks. T-shirts and other items will be for sale. At 12:30 p.m., the Midwest Saddle and Burro Club will be in the arena and 1 p.m., the Mounted Shooters. From 4 to 6 p.m., there will be a pull by eight teams of horses. A period dance with the Free Staters will be held from 7 to 9 p.m., with period dress encouraged. Also, on Saturday, Bill McFarland will autograph “Keep the Flag to the Front: A History of the 8th Kansas Infantry.”

Admission is $5 per adult and $2 per child 12 and under.

Blessing the animals

A Blessing of the Animals will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday on the front lawn of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church. Participants may bring a covered dish and stay for supper.
