Industrial Road Construction
Road work at intersection of 18th Avenue and Industrial Road.
By The Emporia Gazette (Contact)
Monday, September 29, 2008
Starting Tuesday morning after the peak traffic hour, patch work will begin on the northbound lanes of Industrial Road at the intersection of 18th Avenue. Northbound traffic on Industrial will encounter lane changes during construction. Traffic coming off Interstate 35 from the West will have to turn north or south onto Industrial.
Because of other construction in the area there will be periods of congestion. Local traffic will be encouraged to use alternate routes.
According to a press release from the city engineering department, the construction will consist of milling two inches of the northbound lanes on Industrial from the Burger King entrance to the concrete pavement immediately south of the I-35 interchange. The failed pavement area will be removed, the sub-grade repaired and the street section replaced.
The street work is expected to last until Thursday afternoon.

"Local traffic will be encouraged to use alternate routes."
Let's see.. to get to the H.S. and Middle School, (and to get to Staples, Applebees, Wal-Mart, Golden Corral, etc).... I guess the only alternative routes are I-35 to Industrial or take 24th Street from Prairie Street.
With Graphic Arts on the "permanently disabled" list, there aren't too many options.
Leave early.

Its a shame that we don't have a Prairie Street Interchange of off I-35 as was first designed when I-35 was built. What a great savior it would be now, to bad some of the money spent on the KTA Interchange isn't being used to put in a Prairie Street Interchange.

Not that this project does not need to be done, but can't we finish one project before we start another one. They really need to get Graphic Arts done. People are very concerned with the traffic that Lowe's would bring in on Industrial Rd due to the heavy traffic that Industrial has now, but what they are forgetting is that a lot of that current traffic can be diverted to Graphic Arts if they would ever finish that project.

When they say "pavement failure" they mean it! There's a huge hole that you can't get around. It's only going to take 2 days.
I hope.

wirewatt... original plan was for Prairie Street to have an interchange. Residents along Prairie lobbied hard to get it moved to Industrial which was undeveloped at the time. Prairie residents did not want that traffic.
There was not budget or consideration to have an interchange at both locations.

Let's hope it only takes 2 days! Graphic Arts bridge was only supposed to take 6 months, but it's been over a year and I heard it will be at least another 6 months!

I seen a overloaded truck go down Industrial and the street moved like jello , it had to be overweight . You are right , we should wait until 35 is complete. What is the deal with graphic arts by the votech. how long before that is completed.

Traffic in Emporia? How late does it really make you? Were you late for work? Stopped because of a horrific accident?
Or maybe merely delayed by a few minutes so some guy could finish what he was doing at your inconvenience?
I was just there on Labor Day. "Traffic" is not the appropriate word. "Minor, think-nothing-of-it traffic" are the words I would choose. Being delayed 10 or so minutes is soooooooooo not traffic.
Geez. The entire nation is about to be $10 trillion in debt (when the $750 B +/- bailout is approved--if, not when) & the concern in Emporia is about "milling two inches" on Industrial Road.
Nice. Good priorities.

Melissa, the financial crisis is a lousy rotten deal to be sure. But there's not much we can DO about it. So, meanwhile, we're chatting away about the "milling two inches." Forgive us for focusing on our own community.

I'm not sure what the bailout has to do with this article. It's about 18th and Industrial, not Wallstreet.
Priorities??? Tell me what the Emporia city engineering is going to do to fix the national economy??
This is the EMPORIA Gazette. They focus on Emporia matters. You've got your msnbc.com for your bailout woes.

The afternoon and evening traffic out by the schools and industrial is a mess. The city is trying to improve on the roads but in the meantime it's a headache.

The trucks being rerouted through town does add wear and tear on our roads, but they have no choice right now. They are not coming through our town to sight see, that is for sure! The situation here was caused by poor planning! As someone mentioned above, why not wait until one project is done before starting another?
