The two winning authors of this year’s William Allen White Children’s Book Awards will be in Emporia this weekend for the award’s 56th annual celebration.
Ann M. Martin, author of “A Dog’s Life,” and L.D. Harkrader, author of “Airball: My Life in Briefs,” will be here for a ceremony that recognizes the program for young readers. The two authors will meet with third- through eighth-grade students for autograph sessions and will receive their awards during a ceremony Sat. afternoon at W. L. White Auditorium.
Activities begin Friday with read-ins and a sleepover at the Lee Beran Recreation Center, 313 W. Fourth Ave. for students in Grades 3 through 8. The authors will be there to read from their books and sign autographs. Space for the activities are limited to 100 students and adults.
The authors will be on the second floor of Emporia State University’s Memorial Union from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday to sign autographs. Author Beverly Buller will also be there to sign copies of her book, “From Emporia: The Story of William Allen White.” There will be other children’s activities in the Union from 8:30 to 11 a.m.
From 10 a.m. until noon, a box lunch will be served in the Memorial Union Ballroom. Tickets are $4.75 per person and must be purchased in advance.
At 12:15, authors and celebrants will participate in a parade from ESU to W.L. White Auditorium for the awards ceremony that begins at 1 p.m. The authors will be presented with William Allen White Award medals and will answer questions from the audience.
