For the second straight week Madison High School did not need an entire game to invoke the mercy-rule, beating Marais des Cygnes Valley 50-0.
The Bulldogs were led offensively by the efforts of Henry Ott with 88 yards of passing, Michael Luthi and Reece Childers with 55 and 52 yards of rushing and Caleb Hamilton with 58 receiving yards, a touchdown and a 60-yard punt return.
In the first quarter, Madison attacked early, punching in 22 points. Luthi ended the first drive on a 17-yard run, followed by a completed 2-point conversion run. Childers followed with a 29-yard pass to Hamilton, but the conversion attempt could not be completed. Rounding out the first quarter was a 5-yard run by Luthi with a completed pass for a 2-point conversion.
Matching the first quarter, the Bulldogs posted another 22 points with a 2-yard run from Hamilton, a 5-yard pass to Luthi from Ott and a 1-yard run from Luthi.
Ending the game by mercy-rule, Hamilton turned in a 60-yard punt return.
“Reece turned in a nice game. He did well on offense, defense and made a nice play on special teams,” assistant coach Tracy Griffin said.
Madison hosts Southern Coffey County next Friday at 7 p.m.

Northern Heights 31, Chase County 16
After losing the season opener 55-14 to Olpe, it looked like Northern Heights bid to repeat as Flint Hills League champions were murky.
But three weeks later, Northern Heights’ passing game has once again made the Wildcats a contender. Kenneth Bronson threw for 297 yards Friday night to lead Heights past Chase County.
“His completion percentage was good. He’s been really consistent for us,” coach Tad Hatfield said. “He’s put up these consistent numbers each game. His O-line has protected him and done a good job up front. Slowly but surely we’re putting it all together.”
The Wildcats improved to 2-2 overall and 2-1 in the league and the Bulldogs fell to 1-3.

Hartford 30, Waverly 22
Bouncing back from last week’s crushing 72-42 loss to Marais des Cygnes Valley, Hartford High School held off Waverly for a 30-22 victory.
Both teams were scoreless in the first quarter, but Hartford’s Adam Ewy gave the Jaguars the edge in the second quarter, 14-0. Ewy, the only scoring Jaguar, began with a 72-yard run, followed by a short 1-yard run and a pass to John Payton for the 2-point conversion.
Hartford and Waverly each posted eight points in the third quarter, making the score 22-8. Waverly’s Chris Restoff ran in for 47 yards, giving the Bulldogs their first points of the game, but Ewy answered with a 33-yard run of his own.
In a final push for the win after Hartford’s final score, Waverly rallied with Restoff punching in a 38-yard run. Travis Sipe turned in a 63-yard interception return for a touchdown, which would be Waverly’s last score.
Ewy looks to continue his impressive rushing numbers next week as the Jaguars face Crest High Colony next Friday.

Flinthills 42, Lebo 40
It only took one quarter to count Lebo out of reaching a win, losing 42-40 against Flinthills.
Head coach Butch Jones said it himself, the Wolves only turned in what seemed to be three quarters of a game, leaving the first wide open.
The Wolves started with a fumble on the Mustangs’s own 1-yard line, leading to an easy put-in by Logan Fullerton.
“We were bad the first quarter...but we got back on track for the next three,” Jones said.
In the second quarter, Lebo battled back to score with a Cole Brockelman 48-yard reception from Devon Johnston, an 11-yard run by Calvin Perry and a 14-yard reception by Perry from Johnston. However, the Wolves allowed a 9-yard run by Veithe and a 34-yard run by Garrett Breech of Flinthills, making the score 22-20 in favor of the Mustangs.
After the half, Flinthills scored on a 25-yard run by Breech, but Lebo ended the third quarter with a 34-30 lead. Perry ran for 13 yards while Johnston added a 1-yard rush of his own.
The game came down to a final 2-point conversion. After Johnston punched in a 3-yard run, the Wolfpack couldn’t convert for the crucial tie with only seconds on the clock, which ended the game.
“We were on the 1-yard line and couldn’t score. We just failed the play,” Jones said.
