Hospital posts $1.5M loss since Jan. 1

Saturday, September 27, 2008

Newman Regional Health has sustained a year-to-date net loss of $1,512,192. The hospital had budgeted for a $634,606 year-to-date income.

The Newman Regional Health Board of Trustees met Friday afternoon for its monthly meeting. The meeting was moved from its regular Wednesday meeting because of candidate interviews this week for the new chief executive officer. The board members and hospital staff interviewed their two finalists. Names will not been released until the new CEO is announced publicly.

Board members discussed the hospital’s finances during the first part of the meeting. The hospital sustained an operating loss for September of $658,412. The budgeted amount was an income of $134,818.

The hospital also saw a $488,253 loss in inpatient revenues, which was primarily caused by decreased patient days and admissions. Inpatient surgical cases were at 75. The hospital had budgeted for 95. Patient days were 173 fewer than budget and admissions were under by 69.

Outpatient revenues were $44,101 below the expected amount, with 44 fewer outpatient visits.

However, the hospital had 317 outpatient surgical cases, which is five more than the hospital budgeted.

The hospital also lost $6,942 in its bond funds.

In other business, the annual drive-through flu shot clinic is set for Oct. 9. Hours will be announced at a later date. Interim CEO Joyce Grove-Hein said the newest information from the Centers for Disease Control stated that early October is the best time to start making the public aware of flu shots.

Hein also discussed reporting of public data like quality measures.

“We’re going to pull these quality measures and put them on our Web site so it’s easy for the public to monitor how we are doing,” Hein said. “... I think it’s really important for us to share public data.”
