The Flint Hills Community Health Center is working to increase awareness about diabetes and its complications.
The health fair will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the health center, 420 W. 15th Ave. Christa Walker, DDS, will be the featured speaker and will speak about periodontal gum disease and diabetes. The English presentation will begin at 5:40 p.m. and the Spanish presentation will begin at 6:20 p.m.
Hands-on demonstrations will be given by Barb Rourk of Emporia Recreation Center who will speak about strength and flexibility for health. Kelly Whitfield, Newman Regional Health clinical dietitian, will present “Rate Your Plate.”
In addition, there will be free blood sugar screenings, foot screenings, blood pressure screenings and information booths sponsored by local businesses and organizations.
Those attending are asked to park behind the health center at the Earl Center and L-Cat will provide free shuttle transportation to the health center’s front doors.

This is a nice community event, an example that should be emulated by other communities to help the diabetics who are residents of their area. The hands-on demonstrations alone are worth the attendance. On top of that you have those foot screenings, etc. so essential to avoid complications.
