Two Emporians have been chosen for the second state-wide U.S. Attorney’s Citizens Academy in Topeka, according to an announcement from Jim Cross, spokesman for U.S. Attorney Eric Melgren.
Prue Schmidt, a volunteer with CASA/SOS of the Flint Hills, and Krystee Pearson, dispatch supervisor for the Emporia Police Department, will begin Academy sessions next month.
Cross announced names of the 21 class members Thursday in a news release.
The academy will meet for three hours each on six consecutive Tuesdays, beginning Oct. 7, at Washburn University School of Law in Topeka.g
Instructors for the sessions include officials from the U.S. Attorney’s office, Washburn, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the U.S. Postal Service, Topeka Police Department, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the U.S. Marshal Service, the Federal Public Defender, the U.S. District Court and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
Among the topics that will be presented are: the federal criminal justice system in Kansas, iinvestigative techniques, crime trends, courtroom procedures, terrorism, drug trafficking, firearms and explosives violations, white-collar crime, health care fraud, crimes against children and immigration offenses.
