Topeka High gave Emporia its second loss of the season on Thursday in Topeka, ending the Spartans six-game winning streak with a 1-0 overtime win.
The Spartans lost despite outshooting the Trojans 10-3.
“That’s just how soccer is sometimes,” EHS coach Angel Cornejo said. “The winner is not always the team who plays the best, but the team who scores.”
The Trojans scored their goal with five minutes left in overtime when the Spartans made a mistake on defense.
“We talked about not making mistakes in defense before the game and during half time,” Cornejo said. “... I have to give credit to the Trojan defense. They were solid throughout the game. Our kids tried to score so hard but we just could not get pass their keeper. He had ten saves and most of them were outstanding saves.”
Emporia High (6-2) will try to get back on track Tuesday against Topeka West at Hummer Park in Topeka.
