Name one place

Friday, September 26, 2008

TWO THINGS HAVE come about due to Clean Air Emporia’s recent smoking ban campaign.

1. Advertising revenues at The Gazette and on the Emporia Radio Station have improved dramatically.

2. Those with the smoking habit and the businesses who cater to them have found out that with the right amount of tax-exempt dollars, you can affect the rights of others by changing laws.

Name one place where people in Emporia are forced to breathe secondhand smoke.

Good question, Rick: but a trick question. That is the same as asking "name the words in the English language that rhyme with the words orange and silver." The answer to both questions is the same: None.

Rick,

You stated, and I quote "Name one place where people in Emporia are forced to breathe secondhand smoke."

Fine. Here is a composite list of all the businesses in Emporia where people are forced to breathe second hand smoke. Once and for all, lets get this done and over with. Here's the list:

1.

Scenario 1. I want to get in good with the boss. He wants to shoot darts at Town Royal. Do I pass up the chance for a raise because I don't want to breathe in there?

Scenario 2. My wife-beating husband kicked me and our kids out the door. I have minimal clerical skills and need money fast, so I get a job waiting tables at the Wagon Wheel. Do I let my kids starve, or do I breathe 2nd hand smoke?

Scenario 3. I have a reserved seat at the ESU football game. The guys next to me are cigar chain-smokers. Do I give up and go stand somewhere else, losing my investment? Do I risk getting punched in the face for asking them to not smoke?

Anyway - I just wish everyone would stop being hateful about the whole thing, admit it was a bad idea to bring it all up, and focus on the elections, which are so incredibly important this year. Rock Chalk, Barack! Obama 08!

Here is something to ponder: The meeting at the little theater starts at 7P.M. the city wants to limit speakers to no more than 5 minutes, and has schedueled 2 hours for the meeting to last. That is only 24 speakers allowed to talk. You guys at the city might want to go as long as there are speakers monday night and sleep in on tuesday

mythoughts,

The ESU stadium is already non-smoking.

Mythoughts, the question was name one place where you are FORCED to breathe 2nd hand smoke.

On another topic, here are the answers to your scenarios.

Scenario 1: It's your choice to go play darts. Key word: Choice. Maybe you should offer your boss an alternative location where smoking isn't permitted. He/she would probably respect your request. If not, you still have a choice - you are not being FORCED to go.

Scenario 2: Call 911 and have your wife-beating husband arrested for assault. Then go to court and have a restraining order placed against him. Use your phone book to find the numbers for SRS and SOS - both of whom can help you escape that situation. Call a relative or friend and ask for help. You can probably make just as much money working at McDonalds or one of many of other nonsmoking establishments in Emporia.

Scenario 3: Get up out of your seat and go report the person to security. If smoking isn't allowed in the stadium, I'm sure there are security personnel there to enforce the regulations. If smoking IS allowed at the stadium, you made a CHOICE to go there. Nobody FORCED you.

Now that that's settled, please answer the original question. Name one place in Emporia where you are FORCED to breathe 2nd hand smoke.

No one will or can answer the question. It is only a vendictive move to stir up trouble with bar and restaurant owners. Either that or someone has too much imagination along with too much power to get everyone stirred up over NOTHING. There is no smoking problem plain and simple. Now lets find some REAL problems like drugs and gangs, or is that not good enough. These people are really getting on my nerves and making my blood pressure go up. In fact it is hazardous to my health and should legislate a law which will ban public speaking from oppressive people. DONT TREAD ON ME! Ben Frankilin

MisterO,

I second. Couldn't have said it better.

Oppressive? How about the folks who want to take away my right to NOT breathe second-hand smoke. I choose not to frequent places that allow smoking. However, I can't avoid it walking down the street, attending public and outdoor events (including ESU football games), and even trying to access stores and restaurants that have banned smoking, but can't stop smokers from standing right outside the door to feed their addiction.

If you want to smoke, then go ahead. It is your right to die that way if you want. However, don't try to take me and my children with you.

Let me get this straight. So you are saying that your main problem with smokers is that they smoke OUTSIDE?

There you go! Help us defeat this ridiculous smoking ban and alll the smokers will be inside smoking so you will have the fresh, clean, great outdoors all to yourself!

You're a hoot, Newsie. You have made it crystal clear through your nonsensical posts that you don't care about clean air, employee welfare, good health, or community betterment. You care only about spouting your hatred of "chain smoking dullards" and serving your own selfish agenda. You MUST be on the CAE committee!!

Ok Newsie...WHERE ARE YOU FORCED TO BREATHE SMOKE? OMG I have asked many times. WHERE? So walking down the street? OMG How many cars drive by while your walking and you breathe the fumes? Good grief, you are just a constant complainer who has no idea what your talking about. What stores? Is wal mart now a smoking store? I have yet to walk into a smoke filled store. You complain but without substance. Go figure.

although I am against this ban 100%, I keep hearing the question, "Name one place?"

Lets look at this senerio, A mother and father take thier child to a smoking establishment, The child is being forced to breath the secondhand smoke, Not the parents, But the child. He/She does not have the choice and therefore is being forced by the parent.

This may be the only way I can see anyone is forced.

This can al be taken care of with a simple sign,
Smoking permitted here so No one under 18 is.

No need for the city, county or state to get involved
