Grant for SOS
An $800,000 federal grant to SOS to prevent domestic violence has been awarded to Emporia and the surrounding area, according to an announcement from U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts.
The grant is part of the Rural Domestic Violence, Dating Violence, Sexual Assault and Stalking Assistance Program. It is intended to improve victim safety in domestic violence cases in rural areas by encouraging collaborative partnerships among criminal justice agencies, victim service providers and community organizations.
The money will be used to finance several services, including advocacy; a 24-hour live hotline answered by advocates; a safe shelter in Emporia; SOS offices staffed by advocates in Chase, Coffey, Greenwood, Morris and Osage counties; operation of SOS/CASA of the Flint Hills, a child visitation and exchange center, a child advocacy center, and an education and prevention program; and to provide outreach presentations and training throughout the service area.
The grant was made available through the Office of Violence Against Women in the Department of Justice.
Kansas reaction
to bailout
LAWRENCE (AP) — Members of the Kansas congressional delegation and some of their challengers agree that bulletproof taxpayer protection is needed in any Wall Street bailout.
President Bush on Wednesday night pushed for passage of a $700 billion plan to address the current credit crisis, warning that no bailout could lead to a long and painful recession.
