Electronic recycling this weekend

Instead of taking that old electronic equipment to the landfill, take it to the fairgrounds on Sat. to be recycled.

The Natural Resources Advisory Board, along with Asset LifeCycle, LLC, of Topeka, will be holding an electronics recycling event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

“We mostly take in IT equipment, obsolete computer technology,” said Beverly Drew of Asset LifeCycle. “We recycle or destroy desktops, keyboards, phones, televisions and things like that.”

Drew said it is important to recycle electronic equipment because of its toxicity to landfills.

“We also believe that the best way to recycle is to re-use,” she said. “Depending on the age and the condition of the equipment, we refurbish what we can.”

The company also accepts printers, toner cartridges, computer mice, fax machines, copiers, scanners, cameras and cell phones.

There is a $5 fee for computer monitors and a $15 fee for televisions.

All other items will be collected for free.

Or you can bring me your electronic equipment for free...Why would you pay anyone to take something from you? It makes no sense at all. I understand to keep it out of the landfill. But there are other ways to do this. Try Freecycle.com . dont recycle, freecycle. Besides, anyone know the people who is running this? Figure if 100 ppl bring in t.v.s, then they will probly turn around and fix half the stuff they get, make another profit, and THROW the rest away. So i would imagine that 30-50% of the stuff they get will end up in the landfill anyways.
Bring your stuff to me for free....it just makes sense...lol

According to the interview I heard on the radio, it will also cost $5 extra if you want to witness them kill your hard drive. For the sake of security, it's worth it.

Life- to answer your question, and who ever wants to know,
Technically not yet. They are in the process of working with KDHE to get that changed though. They are also going to be able to take in CFL's (those new and ever so popular mini fluorescents) and Fluorescent lamps. As of right now it goes to the transfer-station as trash if it gets left at the HW facility. Unless, they can find someone to take monitors, tv's and microwaves for free there will be a charge for those. Last I knew it was going to be $5 for monitors and $10-$15 for tv's and microwaves. They are TRYING to make it totally free. KDHE has rules to follow on who/where these things can go. They do however take the battery packs from these electronic items. The address is 3000 W. South Ave. Just East of the Transfer-Station and Recycle Center. Amy would be more than glad to answer your questions to best of her knowledge.

I had no problems at all when I went out to the Fairgrounds. There were many people there to direct traffic and they were set up to handle volume. It took no time at all for them to remove my harddrive and kill it. It looked like a pretty good setup to me.
