Peter Pan meeting

The first meeting of a committee to handle long-term maintenance committee at the new Peter Pan Park playground will begin at 5:15 p.m. Monday in the large meeting room of the Emporia Public Library.

Anyone interested in participating in the ongoing maintenance is welcome to attend, a news release stated.

The agenda will include establishing a procedure to elect officers and a preliminary discussion of the organization’s purpose, which could extend to an interest in all of the city’s parks.

For information, call Mike Dorcey at 794-3476, or e-mail him at mikedorcey@cableone.net. People who want to participate but cannot attend the meeting are encouraged to contact Dorcey about future meetings, the news release stated.

Hartford Homecoming

Hartford High School’s Homecoming activities will begin Wednesday with its second annual Homecoming Parade at 6 p.m. The parade will form at the north side of the school and proceed south down Main Street. The float containing Homecoming royalty candidates will lead the parade.

The Hartford Booster Club will have a barbecue afterwards at the football field. Food available will include hamburgers, hot dogs, and “Polish Dog Meal deals,” according to information from organizers.

Activities also will include HHS cheerleaders and a recognition of seniors in all fall sports.

Sponsors recommend that individuals and groups that enter floats in the Hartford Harvest Day parade on Saturday save them to use in the Homecoming parade.

‘Girls Night Out’

At least 14 home-based businesses will contribute a portion of their sales to the Emporia High School Cheerleaders fund at a “Girls Night Out” event from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday in the Emporia Senior Center, 602 E. 12th Ave.

Proceeds from the fundraiser will be used to help defray costs of camps, uniforms and other ongoing cheer expenses, according to a news release from the group.

For more information, call Angie Landwehr, 343-9144.

Businesses that will take part are: Arbonne, Beauty Control, Cookie Lee Jewelry, Creative Memories, Home Interior, Homemade Gourmet, Mary Kay Cosmetics, Longaberger, Pampered Chef, Premier Design, Silpada, Tupperware, Uppercase Living, and Usborne Books.

Road improvement

Road B between Roads 300 and 310 will be closed for about two weeks beginning on Friday, to allow Lyon County Road and Bridge Department crews to install a new concrete box culvert.

If everything goes according to plan, the road will reopen on Oct. 10.
