Flu shot clinic

The Lyon County Health Department/Flint Hills Community Health Center will offer flu vaccinations from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 21 at the Anderson Building on the Lyon County Fairgrounds as part of a mass vaccination clinic. The clinic is designed to prepare first responders to know how to be ready for a natural disaster or epidemic. Public flu vaccinations will also be offered.

Community members can help prepare first responders for disasters with the added benefit of getting a vaccination, said Scott O’Mara, of the community health center. The public also can volunteer in various roles to help make operations during the day smoother.

For more information about the clinic or to volunteer, call O’Mara at 342-4864, Ext. 278. Flu vaccinations will be available for $20 cash or with proof of Medicare or Medicaid.

Federal aid

Lyon County is among 65 counties in Kansas that have been made eligible for federal disaster assistance, the Federal Emergency Management Agency announced Monday.

More than $63.5 million has been obligated to Kansas for disaster-related damages from the December 2007 ice storm. Lyon County will receive $37,906. The funds help Kansas government entities and eligible private non-profit organizations repair storm damage, rebuild infrastructure and help with emergency costs such as debris removal and overtime for emergency workers, according to a press release.

The presidential declaration authorized funding through FEMA’s Public Assistance Grant Program, which pays 75 percent of eligible costs. The remaining 25 percent is split between the state, which provides 10 percent of the funding, and the local applicant, which provides 15 percent of the funding. According to the press release, the cost of the recovery effort exceeded $85.3 million and included more than 1,200 projects from 624 applicants.
