COTTONWOOD FALLS —
Cottonwood Falls will be buzzing on Saturday with the annual BroomWeed Festival.
Sue Smith of the Emma Chase Cafe in Cottonwood Falls said the festival was named after the broom weed that grows this time of year.
“The broom weed blooms about this time of year,” she said. “I think it’s beautiful. I thought it was a fun way to decorate the stage.”
The festival will include live music and a car show by the Wichita A’s Model A Club. The car show will be at 1 p.m. on Broadway Street in Cottonwood Falls.
Live music will be from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., also on Broadway Street.
Music will be performed by The Lay Family at 3 p.m. The Lay Family includes eight kids and 15 instruments. This is the Lay Family’s first appearance in Cottonwood Falls.
The other two performers are Dan Bliss, of Kansas City “Pickin’ the Blues” at 7 p.m. and Nick Charles, of Victoria, Australia, at 8 p.m. Charles will perform songs from his new CD, Smith said.
Smith said Bliss and Charles have won awards for their music. Both have albums available. According to www.danbliss.com, Bliss lives in Kansas City. Bliss took second place in 2005 and third place in 2007 in the International Fingerstyle Guitar Championship at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield. He won first place in fingerstyle guitar at the 2005 Kansas State Fiddling & Picking Championships in Lawrence.
“Charles has been a performing and touring acoustic musician for over 25 years on the Australian and international acoustic music scene,” according to www.charlesguitar.com. Charles has won many awards as well.
In addition to entertainment, the Emma Chase will provide half-price meals for all participating jam session musicians. Jam sessions will be downtown all day. Anybody can participate in the jam session. The cafe will have a special concert menu from 5 to 7 p.m. Attendees are asked to bring cash for gratuities for musicians if desired.
