Tina Commons became the first Emporia State soccer player earn a player of the week award since the 2006 season on Monday.
Commons was named the MIAA defensive player of the week after earning her first career victory in goal last Thursday in a 1-0 win over Missouri Western.
Commons, a senior from Emporia, started just the third game of her career at goalie against Western. She joined the soccer team this season after three years on the basketball team and had never played goalie before this year. She has filled in at goal for the Hornets because of injuries to starting goalie Jen Stillmock.
Commons made five saves against the Griffons, who fired 11 shots. The shutout was the first by an ESU goalie against an MIAA team since Oct. 23, 2005.
Commons moved from goal to backer on Saturday in a 1-0 loss to No. 10 Truman. She was a key contributor in limiting the Bulldogs to three shots on goal and only one goal. The Bulldogs had averaged 2.5 goals and 8.2 shots on goal entering the match.
