Turn on your lights

I would like to inform those drivers who are not aware of a traffic law regarding headlights.
As per Section 144 a3 of the current Standard Traffic Ordinance of the State of Kansas, “Lights are required when windshield wipers are in continuous use as a result of rain, sleet, or snow.”
It seems there are many people who do not observe this law which is for their own safety. In many cases, it is hard to see cars in heavy rain that don’t have their lights on.
Maybe this will help serve to educate the ones who aren’t aware and maybe cut down on accidents.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that annoys. It's seems like light colored, hard to see cars are the worst culprits, too. My car has automatic headlights and I often have to manually turn them on when I turn the wipers on. You just have to get in the habit.

Where do you go to find these laws? I have been driving for almost 20 years took drivers education and have never heard of this law. I'm not trying to smart just stating the truth. I do turn on my lights in the above situations for my safety but was unaware of the law. Oh, and I do drive a light color vehicle.... LOL

Weltha,
Try http://www.kslegislature.org/legsrv-s....
You can also find statutes on use of turn signals, seat belts, speed, changing lanes on a highway. It took a while to find a specific statute (not the best search engine on this site), but they're all there.

Good advice, everyone, but I'll just add one thing -- remember to use your low beams. In rain, fog and snow, high beams can blind the driver.

Thanks nuts. I honestly did not know it was a law I thought it was just common sense/courtesy to do it. It kinda sucks that we have to have laws that should be common sense/courtesy doesn't it!?.

most of the major highways coming into missouri have road department signs advising out of state travelers about the same law over here.

I believe it became law last July Weltha. There are many laws on the books that most do not know about. Remember though, "ignorance of the law is not a excuse".

Forget headlights, people need to remember to turn on their turn signal lights when they make a turn!

While we are at it, can we remind people that unless otherwise posted, you CAN turn right at a red light when there is no traffic coming!

Amen! To both Josies and Deepthoughts post(s). Thanks neighbor for the legit answer on the date and for reminding that "ignorance is not always bliss"
Quoted from my first and second posts. " I do turn on my lights in the above situations for my safety but was unaware of the law."
"I thought it was just common sense/courtesy to do it. It kinda sucks that we have to have laws that should be common sense/courtesy doesn't it!?."
