The Emporia High volleyball team went 5-1 at the Rossville Tournament on Saturday, and Sarah Kolmer broke teammate Hilary Heinrichs’ school record for assisted blocks in a match.
The Spartans lost their first match to Circle High, putting them in the consolation bracket, before ripping off five straight wins: Two against Tonganoxie, two against Rossville and one against Royal Valley.
For EHS, the win over Rossville was particularly important: the Bulldogs had dropped the Spartans in a three-game match in the season-opening Emporia Quad.
“They were serious about that game,” Emporia coach Betsy Martling said. “They were out for revenge. It was time to prove that that was just a fluke.”
Kolmer set her record of seven assisted blocks, breaking Heinrichs’ old record of six, in the second game of the second match against Tonganoxie. Kolmer also added three solo blocks.
“She was just on fire,” Martling said. “Nobody could stop her.”
Kill statistics weren’t available, but Martling said Ashley Leihsing stood out as the Spartans’ go-to person for kills.
Emporia improved its record to 7-5. The Spartans next travel to Junction City on Tuesday night for matchups against Junction, Shawnee Heights and Hayden.
