A furious second-half rally led by quarterback Kenneth Bronson wasn’t enough to dig the Northern Heights Wildcats out of a deep hole at home against Osage City on Friday night in Allen, as the Indians came away with a 36-33 victory over Heights.
After Osage City rolled to a 30-12 halftime lead thanks in part to a pair of Jordan Tice touchdown runs and a 20-yard James Schweiger fumble recovery and return, Bronson and the Wildcats stormed back with three touchdowns in the final two quarters to come close but eventually fall just short.
“The kids came out after halftime and played really well,” Northern Heights co-head coach Tad Hatfield said. “They fought back and got us back in the game, we just came up short in the end. The kids played a hard, physical game.”
Much of Heights’ rally came on the legs and arm of Bronson, who sandwiched a pair of TD runs — one for 54 yards and the other for 1 yard — around an Osage City touchdown pass from C.J. Marple to Blake Stoppel that drew Northern Heights to within 10 at 36-26 in the fourth quarter.
Bronson’s third TD pass of the night — a 30-yarder to James Crabtree — helped bring Heights to within three points late, but Osage City held off the Wildcats from there to seal the win.
Bronson finished 22-of-42 for 227 yards and 3 TD through the air while rushing for 167 yards and two scores on 12 carries.
“Kenneth’s known more for his passing than rushing, but he really stepped up his rushing tonight,” Hatfield said. “He showed good running ability, and that gave us a more balanced attack.”
Osage City came away with the victory thanks to the two-headed monster of Marple and Tice. Marple finished the night 11-of-21 for 213 yards and two TD passes while Tice tore through the Heights defense to the tune of 228 yards on the ground.
“Tice hurt us,” Hatfield said. “We missed some key tackles on him in the first half where we were in a position to make a play and didn’t. He’s a good running back.”
With the victory, Osage City improved to 2-1 while Heights dropped to 1-2.

Olpe 49, Baxter Springs 8
Cole Krueger rushed for 194 yards and Bradley Argabright caught two TD passes and intercepted two as Olpe (3-0) blew out the opposition for the third week in a row.
Argabright caught two 35-yard scoring throws from Matt Redeker, one in the first quarter and one in the second. Josh Klumpe was on the receiving end of the Eagles’ first and biggest scoring play, a 55-yard pass from Redeker.
“They’re pretty aggressive with their defense, so they brought linebackers up pretty tight,” Olpe coach Chris Schmidt said. “Anything kind of short yardage, we was able to play-action and go over the top of ’em, and that’s kind of what we did.
“Cole ran pretty steady all night. The line did a good job.”
Krueger scored on a two-yard run in the second quarter, and Wade Schmidt and Jake Brinkman added one-yard runs in the fourth.
Defensively, the Eagles held Baxter Springs to just seven yards rushing and 138 yards of total offense. Olpe also picked off four passes for the game.

Lebo 48, Waverly 28
A scoreless first quarter gave way to a scoring flurry for the Lebo Wolves on Friday night on the road against Waverly, as Lebo scored on the first play of the second frame on the way to a 24-point quarter and a 48-28 victory over the Bulldogs.
Neither team scored in the opening period, but then Lebo’s Adam Laflin took it into the end zone from 4 yards out to open the second quarter to help put Lebo on top 8-0 after a Devin Johnston 2-point conversion run, and Lebo rolled from there.
Laflin scored twice more before halftime to help Lebo stake itself to a 24-6 halftime lead, with Waverly’s only points coming on a 68-yard kickoff return by Chris Restoff, one of two kickoff return TDs on the night for the Bulldogs.
“We rushed the ball very well in the second quarter and ran our offense,” Lebo coach Butch Jones said. “We obviously broke down in our kickoff coverage, but Adam ran the ball very well and we got our running game going.”
The halftime edge gave Lebo enough of an edge that it still enjoyed a comfortable lead even after Waverly got its offense going in the second half. Restoff took another kickoff to the house on a 70-yard return and then Travis Sipe threw two TD passes to get the Bulldogs’ offense in gear, but Lebo’s Johnston answered with TD runs of 1 and 48 yards and Cole Brockelman added a fourth-quarter, 24-yard score to keep Waverly at arms length.
All told, Lebo rolled up 405 yards rushing while holding Waverly to just 73 yards on the ground.
“We let them get two good returns on us, and they got some passes over the top of our defense, but I thought our rush defense was very good tonight,” Jones said.
