Hornets beat Fort Hays 24-13

Fourth quarter

Emporia State finished off its third victory of the year and first MIAA win following a largely uneventful fourth quarter, beating Fort Hays State 24-13. Backup quarterback Zach Rampy was injured at the end of a 54-yard run that ended just shy of the end zone — which was called back by a holding penalty — but Rampy simply fell on the football and had the wind knocked out of him. Rampy left the field under his own power and was replaced by previously injured starter Andre Sloan El for the last few plays of the game. Sloan El rolled his ankle in the second quarter.

Third quarter

Fort Hays State put together a 17-play drive taking 9 minutes and 10 seconds, but managed just a 21-yard field goal by Nathan Rausa at the end of the drive to pull within 24-13 with 17.3 seconds left in the third.

Zach Rampy came out at quarterback for ESU to begin the second half, with Andre Sloan El still sidelined with an unknown injury. Sloan El is on the sideline with his left shoe off and appears to be hobbling. ESU's opening drive of the second half stalled at the Fort Hays 49-yard line.

Second quarter

Derek Lohmann picked off a pass at the Fort Hays 32 and returned it to the 9, setting up the Hornets for a 1-yard TD pass from Zach Rampy to Lucas Sullivan with 30.7 seconds left. Rampy then found Sean Partridge near the right back of the end zone for a 2-point conversion play, and the Hornets now lead 24-10 at the half.

Rampy came in on the previous drive for an injured Andre Sloan El, who limped off the field after a run just inside the FHSU 30. Sloan El headed to the locker room right after Rampy's pass to Sullivan.

Sloan El's 29-yard option keeper to the right side gave ESU a 16-10 lead with 11:45 remaining in the half. Sloan El motioned a handoff to Brian Murphy, then found a hole off-tackle and ran to the right side, running in untouched for the score. The extra point was blocked.

Earlier on the drive, on a 3rd-and-17 play from ESU's 43, Sloan El lofted a pass over the deep middle beyond two defenders, and Partridge leaped and caught it for a spectacular 30-yard gain to keep the drive alive.

First quarter

Fort Hays State's Nathan Rausa kicked a 26-yard field goal with 2:28 left in the first quarter to tie the score at 10-10. Both teams have scored on both of their drives thus far.

ESU had three costly penalties on the drive, aiding Fort Hays in getting into scoring position. Nathan Linsey was called for a roughing the passer penalty, and Travis Lee and Tyler Mikkelson were each whistled for pass interference.

A nine-yard touchdown pass from Andre Sloan El to Sean Partridge on the previous drive gave the Hornets a 10-7 lead with 5:49 left in the first quarter. On 3rd-and-9 from the FHSU 19, Fort Hays' Jason Carr hit Adrian Abner over the middle before Sloan El's pass arrived. That gave the Hornets 1st-and-goal, and Sloan El rolled left before finding Partridge coming across the middle of the end zone.

Emporia State marched downfield for a field goal on its opening drive, but Fort Hays State answered with a touchdown drive to take a 7-3 lead with 8:21 remaining in the first.

A would-be touchdown on a reverse play to Xavier Smith on the first play of the game was called back by a holding penalty on Matt Coursen, which brought the ball back to the Fort Hays 32. Sloan El delivered runs of 6 and 16 yards to help put the Hornets in position for kicker Matt Perry's 30-yard field goal.

Fort Hays finished off its TD drive with a 14-yard pass from Mike Garrison to Anthony Smith. Smith caught four passes on the drive for 58 yards.
