ESU helps launch fiscal future

Saturday, September 20, 2008

Learning what college students can do to educate themselves about solutions to the nation’s looming fiscal crisis is the goal of a program involving Emporia State University and eight other institutions across the country.

America’s Future: Protecting the Fiscal Health of Our Democracy is a new initiative formed by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU).

Rob Catlett, assistant professor of mathematics, computer science and economics, and ESU’s campus coordinator for the project, joined a group of campus coordinators at an organizational meeting in Washington, D.C. Sept. 11–13.

America’s Future is a partnership between members of AASCU’s American Democracy Project and Public Agenda, a non-profit research and civic engagement organization based in Washington. Part of the project’s goal is to create a climate of public opinion that demands fiscal accountability from elected officials. A series of locally-designed activities and projects on each of the nine college campuses will attempt to encourage debate on the nation’s fiscal health.
