Lauren Cathey’s late goal gave the Emporia State women’s soccer team their first victory at the ESU Pitch on Thursday — and the Hornets’ first conference win in two years — as Emporia State defeated Missouri Western 1-0.

Cathey’s shot in the 79th minute, coming off a pass from Alicia Smith, made its way to the right corner of the net. The goal was Cathey’s first of the year.

The Hornets fired 20 shots to the Griffons’ 11, with Cathey leading the attack with four shots and three on goal. Smith and Shelley Marsh each got off two shots on goal and three total.

Goalkeeper Tina Commons earned her first career win and shutout.

The last time ESU defeated a conference foe was Sept. 23, 2006, when the Hornets beat Missouri Western 3-1. The shutout was the Hornets’ first in the MIAA since Nov. 7, 2004, when they blanked Washburn 2-0.

Emporia State (3-3, 1-1 MIAA) will next face Truman State on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the TRYSA Soccer Complex. Missouri Western fell to 1-5-1 on the season and 0-3 in conference.
