ESU authors at reading festival in Lawrence

Friday, September 19, 2008

Lawrence — Two Emporia State instructors will participate in Lawrence’s River City Reading Festival, a day-long celebration of reading, will feature author readings, book signings, workshops for all ages and the return of popular storybook characters.

Max McCoy and Kevin Rabas, both instructors at Emporia State University, are among the featured authors at the festival, which is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 27, at the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vermont St.

McCoy’s works include “The Sixth Rider” and “I, Quantrill.” Rabas’ first book of poetry, “Bird’s Horn and Other Poems,” was published in 2007.

Altrusa Club of Lawrence, a service organization that promotes literacy, has joined with several other community organizations to plan, organize, and present the festival.

Thomas Frank, author of the best-selling “What’s the Matter with Kansas?” will be the keynote speaker at the festival. Frank’s talk at 5 p.m. at the Dole Institute of Politics will cap a full-day celebration of reading designed to appeal to all ages and span a broad range of topics and genres. His newest book is “The Wrecking Crew: How Conservatives Rule.”
