Neosho Rapids meeting

The Neosho Rapids Community Projects group will meet at 6 p.m. Sunday at the Neosho Rapids Jones Park. The group will elect officers, finalize plans for the barbecue supper at Hartford Harves Day and discuss playground equipment for the park. For information: call Bettina, (620) 366-1015 after 5 p.m.

Family reunion

The Smith-Staats family reunion will be from noon to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Emporia Presbyterian Manor, 2300 Industrial Road. It will be in Room 110.

Veterans Tribute contest

Entries are being accepted for the All Veterans Tribute Student Essay and Poster Contest. The theme for this year’s contest is “A true American hero: The story of a veteran.” Students are encouraged to interview friends and relatives who are veterans and do research in family records and historical archives.

The contest is open to students in grades five through 12, in five categories: grade five, grade six, grade seven, grade eight and grades nine through 12. Essays for grades five and six should be 200 to 300 words; grades seven and eight, 300 to 500 words; and grades nine through 12, 500 to 750 words.

Entries in the poster contest must be on standard-size white poster board, 22 by 28 inches.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the winners.

The deadline for entries is Oct. 17, mailed or delivered to the Emporia Chamber & Visitors Bureau, 719 Commercial St., Emporia, KS 66801.

Class on children and the Internet

The Emporia Public Library will present information for parents about Internet safety in a session at 6 p.m. Wednesday. The program will be repeated at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Children’s Services Coordinator Lori Heller and Technology Specialist Brad Bauer will conduct the classes. They will cover such topics as: computer and Internet settings to be aware of, filtering options, common sense parenting decisions, Internet searching techniques and useful sites. There will be handouts containing valuable advice and resources.

Registration is requested by calling the library at 340-6462.The programs are free and open to the public.
