Sirens not working
After Wednesday’s weekly test of the city’s emergency alert system, the Emporia Police Department announced that three of the city’s sirens failed the test and have been taken out of service until they can be repaired. The sirens are on East 12th Avenue near Dillons, in Jones Park and in the 1400 block of East Sixth Avenue.
Karr appointed
Kansas Senate Democratic Leader Anthony Hensley has appointed former State Sen. Jerry Karr of Emporia to the Kansas Commission on Rural Policy.
The commission is charged with developing a plan to support and encourage rural business development in the state, foster entrepreneurship, create new jobs and attract young families to targets communities.
Karr, who has a pig farm north of Emporia, has remained active in rural affairs since his retirement from the Kansas Senate in 1998. He recently served on the governor’s panel to help develop a state policy on wind power.
